Apple is said to have sold a good 400,000 pieces from Vision Pro so far – possibly even less. This is almost nothing for a product of the success-spoiled iPhone group. The reasons are quickly called: the combined VR and AR headset is extremely expensive at least 4000 euros and still has no particularly comfortable form factor. A good 650 grams press on the head, even if Apple (and accessory providers) want to cushion this with upholstery and headbands. On the other hand, the technical quality of the vision pro: enormously sharp picture, fast eye and gesture tracking, high immersion and good mixed reality mode is also very praised. How now that Wall Street Journal writesis the Apple headset, at least in some areas, a hit: niche applications from the business sector.
Training in different places
Examples include training pilots, the planning of kitchens, the development of new medication or the 3D design of complex products. The Canadian pilot training company Cae uses the vision pro for learning fresh pilots, which then no longer have to be in the (even more expensive) simulator for certain runs. The Apple headset has opened new opportunities, although Cae augmented reality has been using for years. The display of the glasses is so sharp that all areas of a cockpit can be read. In addition, training of several people is possible in several places at the same time.
The French aerospace company Dassault has created its own 3dexperience platform, with which companies can use the Vision Pro to design new products via the 3Dlive app. Users include Virgin Galactic and Hyundai.
Vision Pro for buying kitchen
The HIMISCHES chain from the USA uses the Vision Pro at five locations to help users set up their new kitchen. By the end of the year, the devices in 100 markets are to be used, in the future in up to 400. “Spatial computing, especially with the Vision Pro, can close (the gap in the sales talk) by enabling customers to present their new rooms clearly and thus make securely purchase decisions,” said a manager of the company.
However, it is not new that special devices from the area of virtual and augmented reality are used in industrial applications: this was also the case with Microsoft’s Hololens and previously on Google Glass. However, both devices did not become mass market products.
