TV+: Apple's streaming service supposedly a massive loss of loss

TV- instead of TV+: Despite major savings measures, Apple's video streaming service continues to write deep red numbers. The losses are now over one billion US dollars a year, as The Information reports on Thursday, citing informed people. According to industry analysts, TV+ counted around 40 million subscribers at the end of 2024 and is therefore far behind competitors such as Netflix (over 300 million subscribers) and Disney+ (over 120 million subscribers). So far, Apple has not mentioned any concrete subscription and sales figures for the in-house services.

According to the report, the group spent over $ 5 billion for the production of content every year and, at the start of the streaming service, has calculated with extremely high losses over the first ten years.

At the same time, the company apparently started to start the red pencil last year: Apple boss Tim Cook and other top managers were high spending, including costs for private jets to promote stars and extremely expensive feature film productions, which ultimately met with little interest. The group already adjusted its cinema strategy last year: In the film “Wolfs” with the duo Brad Pitt and George Clooney, film “Wolfs” was dispensed with – much to the director's annoyance.

TV+productions can have a long list of nominations and prices, whereupon the Apple boss is also happy to refer to. With series there are also two clear hits with Ted Lasso and Severance. According to information from the information Apple's other aboduses also weaken: Music, Arcade, Fitness+ and News+ are profitable in contrast to TV+, but only in a manageable framework. In addition, there is hardly any growth and the number of uses is also low in Arcade and News+.

Apple's service division is the only segment of the group that can show even greater growth. Most of the income from the increasingly controversial app store commissions and the billion dollar search deal with Google contribute a large part.

It remains unclear in the sixth year which strategy Apple is pursuing with this business. The industry still puzzles over TV+ & Co. He just doesn't understand “apart from the marketing aspect,” said Netflix co-boss Ted Sarandos straight In an interview by the Variety magazine – But there are “really clever people” at work, “maybe they see something we can't see”. Some of the Apple services are linked to Apple's hardware, but TV+ is available across platforms, and there has also been an Android app.
