Tip: solve internet problems with the FritzBox via VPN

I have set up the connection as described in your Heise+article and also come to my Fritzbox via VPN, but then no further on the Internet. This means that I can only access my home network, but I must not email or browse. Strangely, whatsapp is going. How could that be? Is there a firewall or a list of permitted services for VPN on the FritzBox somewhere?

The Fritzbox Firewall is active by default, but allows all the compounds necessary for VPN. There is no central “whitelist” for VPN services.

The fact that WhatsApp works could be due to the fact that some apps use their own connection paths and are not always completely dependent on the VPN tunnel.

In the current Fritzos, there are no settings for connections from end devices to a Fritzbox that could help here.

This applies to IPSec as well as to Wireguard. Therefore, first check whether a special address is entered on the Fritzbox under “Internet> Access data> DNS server”. If possible, change the DNS server trial on the one assigned to the one by the internet provider.

You may also have incorrectly used the VPN connection between the FritzBox and other networks when it comes to setting up. Here, for example, there can be problems if the two routers acting as the DHCP server use the same IP address (typically 192.168.178.1) or not one Via a public IPV4 address has. In addition, the VPN configuration must allow the entire internet traffic (“send all data via the VPN tunnel”).

For a tunnel from an end device such as iPhone or MacBook, you can try the following: Delete an existing but first non -functioning connection. Then click on “Add VPN connection” and note the information for IPSEC or make a screenshot of it. Alternatively, use Wireguard. After a restart of the Fritzbox, the problem should be fixed.
