Tip: clean up email memory | Heise online

Apple Mail’s memory requirement has grown to 34 gigabytes on my computer. How can I regain the space on my SSD?

Apple Mail usually creates a local copy of all open and sent emails, including the attachments.

First, you should check whether the option “Only the latest” is active in mail under “Mail> Settings> Accounts> Your Account> Account Information.

You can then delete emails that you no longer need. This also removes the associated appendix.

Unfortunately, Mail does not reveal how big a message is by default. You change this under “Representation> Show email size”.

To find the biggest space eaters quicklySelect in “Representation> Sort by” “attachment” or even better “size”. It is deleted with the step back button or by clicking on the trash in the icon bar of Mail.

To finally release the place, right -click on the respective account or the collective term “All” and select “Delete deleted objects finally …” from the context menu.

If you are finished with the adjustment, under “Presentation> Sort according to” change the display to “Date” again. In the system settings (from MacOS 13 Ventura) under “General> Speicher> Mail” you can read the success of your copy, if not always reliably
