Tip: Change the Steam client to Apple Silicon

My game collection is mostly on Steam. The program is quite sluggish and still requires the translation layer Rosetta 2. Is there no native version for Apple chips?

In fact, developer and Steam operator Valve took a lot of time to change his client.

At the editorial deadline, the current Mac version was still the variant for Intel chips. Only the Steam helper application is already on Apple-Silicon-based.

At the end of June 2025, Valve published a beta version for MacOS that you can try out at your own risk.

The beta is installed via the Steam client. With the Steam client open, click on “Settings” in the menu bar and select the “Steam Beta-Update” option under “Surface> Client Beta participation”.

Steam is now asking you to restart the app. Then the client loads and installs the update, whereby your login data is preserved.

After successful installation, you will find the note “Steam Beta Update” in the menu bar under “Steam> Info for Steam> Steam BetaBranch”. In the activity display, the addition “Apple” instead of “Intel” is now available in the “CPU” tab under “Art”.

In our test, the Apple-Silicon-Beta reacted a little faster than before, but some users complain of frequent crashes. It is not yet clear when Valve finalizes the update to Apple Silicon and regularly offers download.
