Tip: access the Fritzbox via Wireguard-VPN

Since Fritzos 7.5 I should also be able to access my local Fritzbox via VPN with the faster Wireguard. How do I set this up?

With the Wireguard app, you can access a Fritzbox (not 6590 and 6490) more easily than with the previous standard IPSec.

The encrypted tunnel through the public internet also makes access to hotels or unprotected WLAN hotspots safe and discreet.

But before you have to prepare the FritzBox for it. If you haven’t done it yet, the FRITZBOX (“FRITZ.BOX” in the address line of the browser) will open one first in the web front end under “Internet> Myfritz account” Free account at Myfritz And give a password.

You will then receive an email and have to register your FritzBox by clicking.

Then click the “Set up FritzBox user” button and “New user”. Write down your username.

If the user is set up, click on the edit symbol with the pencil under “System> Fritzbox user” next to the user name. Give a password, set a catch on “VPN” and carry out the entries. Confirm the changes if necessary by pressing a button on the Fritzbox. If you have already worked with IPSEC-VPN beforehand, this step is superfluous.

Then go to “Add connection” and “Connect individual device” under “Internet> Sermons> VPN (wireguard)”. Click on “Next”, give a name like “Wireguard-VPN” and choose “Completion”.

The app then automatically creates a new configuration and uses the information from the QR code.

Make a screenshot from the Fritzbox user surface side to be able to use the QR code again, for example for other smartphones or tablets.

To start the VPN on the go, open “Settings> VPN”, if necessary, make a catch with the Wireguard connection under “Device VPN” and put the slide on “VPN status”.
