“Three years of big iPhone redesigns”: What Apple is planning from 2026

Apple is full of major changes in the iPhone several years ago. From the coming month, changes in the form of the smartphone from Cupertino will be planned from the coming month, as it has not existed for a long time. But it does not stay that way: In 2026 and 2027, there are also greater innovations in design. Apple Plans “for the first time for the first time for three full years with big iPhone redesigns,” writes the Bloomberg-Apple reporter Mark Gurman In his newsletter on Sunday.

It will probably start on September 9th with the iPhone-17 generation. In addition to classic iPhones such as the new standard 17 and the models 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, which are supposed to have new camera systems, the iPhone 16-Plus successor iPhone 17 Air (name is still unsafe) is considered to be particularly exciting. The device should be the thinnest iPhone ever. However, users have to compromise: there is supposedly only one camera, no physical SIM card and a comparatively weak battery. To this end, Apple’s own modem chip C1 is said to be installed, which is still slower than the competition from Qualcomm, which is in other iPhones.

Apple then plans a “real gamuchanger” for 2026: In autumn, the first foldable of the group is to be released after years of waiting. The device should be based on models such as those of Samsung, but have a particularly durable hinge and hardly any visible “ironing fold”, implemented thanks to in-cell touchscreen. According to Gurman, the device comes with four cameras – one in the front, one inside and two on the back. The SIM slot will also be missing here.

Gurman also wants to have learned that Apple does not focus on facial recognition Face ID on the foldable, but uses the fingerprint sensor Touch ID (again). In the absence of a home button, this could be installed on the display or in the Sleep/Wake key. At first, only white and black are supposedly intended in colors. According to Gurman, another foldable for 2027 is already in preparation.

For 2027, an “iPhone 20” (19 is supposedly failed) is planned for the 20th birthday of the iPhone. The design is then supposed to get away from the standard look, instead Apple wants to pull rounded glass corners over the whole device. The Liquid Glass design introduced with iOS 26 should fit particularly well. It remains to be seen whether something changes on the look. Overall, according to Gurman, 2025 will not be a “revolutionary” year for the iPhone, but it lies the foundation for major changes in the next two years. “Exciting times for iPhone fans.”
