According to its own statements, Instagram has broken the three billion daily active users. For comparison: Tikkok comes to a good half worldwide, with X it is only millions and no billions of people a day. Facebook, also provided by META, also comes to more than two billion active users a day.
Instagram boss Adam Mosseri says in a video published on the platform that Reels and direct messages (Direct Massages, DM) have a large part of reaching “this milestone”. Reels are short videos based on Tikkok. With a wiping movement upwards, the following videos come at lightning speed. As usual, the selection is based on a mixture of general interest in content and personal interests. Instagram also shows a lot of videos in the regular feed instead of exclusively photos, as it was at the beginning of the service.
Reels and DMS reorganized
Now Mosseri announces that the reels feed can be personalized. This happens by showing people seeing videos whether they want to see more or less content. The European Digital Services Act (DSA) also stipulates that online services have to offer their users more transparency and control what they see in their feeds. Meta already offers opportunities to mark contributions as “not interesting”. For children and adolescents, parents can even determine individual words to which no content may be displayed.
Instagram also adapts his home screen. While the button is currently sitting in the middle of opening the app in the lower area with a plus, the content can be uploaded, the arrow for direct messages will be placed there in the future. So far, these can be reached at the top right. The plus hikes into the corner at the top left, on the right there is only the heart to like contributions.
Main competitor Tiktok also tries to keep users on duty with DMS and voice messages. So far, this was rather cumbersome and limited. Now photos can be sent in group chats, just like in a classic messenger. Voice messages are limited to one minute. This is also the case on Instagram. WhatsApp, on the other hand, allows you to send entire private podcast episodes to friends.
Instagram was most recently published as an app for the iPad.
