Third provider SSDS now also for Mac Mini with M4 Pro

Anyone who has one of the popular compact MACs from the Mac-Mini-M4 series knows Apple SSDS price list: For example, the standard model that costs 699 euros is paid for the upgrade of 256 GB on 2 TB a whopping 1000 euros. Furthermore, it is not intended to upgrade from the manufacturer: you buy the small Mac, according to Apple’s view, and then leaves it as it was acquired. Fortunately, third-party providers now offer their own SSD kits, with which (somewhat) experienced hobbyists can subsequently install more storage space. A lot of money can be saved. However, there was one problem: since the SSDs for the standard MAC-MINI with M4 differ from those of the Mac Mini with M4 Pro, two variants had to be developed. That has now happened.

As can be seen from the Hong Kong provider’s M4-SSD website, are now also Modules for the Mac Mini M4 Pro offered. Three variants are currently being offered: 2 TB, 4 TB and – currently sold out or not yet available – 8 TB. The prices are 459, 699 and $ 1400-plus delivery costs, which, however, are only 5 euros in Germany. There is also import sales tax (19 percent). For comparison: Apple’s Mac Mini M4 Pro comes for 1699 euros with 512 GB, for 1 TB an additional 250 euros, for 2 TB 750 euros, for 4 TB 1500 euros and a total of 3000 euros for 8 TB.

Expandmacmini.com, the first provider of upgrades, wants in the future Also memory modules for Mac-Mini-M4-Pro machines offer, however, currently lists as “coming Soon, stay tuned” (“coming soon, stay tuned”). The prices for the M4 Pro variants of the SSDS lie above that for the M4. Here 1 TB for $ 189 and 2 TB for $ 299 – also plus shipping and import sales tax.

In addition, M4-SSD also sells empty boards for soldering existing memory modules ($ 25) and a so-called Dfu kit. This is a license for a Windows software that can also be used to use PCs to use what is necessary for the establishment of the SSD DFU mode to control the Mac (Device firmware update). Otherwise a Mac is required for this.

The maximum writing and reading speeds are 3000 or 3300 MB/s. The chips should be “brand new” and have the “same lifespan as Apple components”. Instructions on how the installation must be carried out shows A video from the manufacturer. It should be borne in mind: M4-SSD acts as an independent company with address in Hong Kong (which can only be found in privacy conditions). The company wants to provide a year of warranty on its products. It remains unclear who the supplier of the memory chips is-the modules seem to have been created by reverse engineering.
