If you are traveling a lot, you know the problem: Almost all devices have now been provided with USB-C interfaces (including Apple’s own hardware), only iPhones that are older than generation 15. Accordingly, many users still carry a Lightning-Ausb-C cable that is no longer necessary. The Swiss hobbyist Ken Pillonel has now adopted this problem and developed the first commercially produced iPhone shell that turns a Lightning device a USB-C device-including data passage, charge and carplay support.
A question of sustainability
Pillonel, actually from the robotics area, had caused a sensation in 2021 when he managed to convert an iPhone X to USB-C-his unique piece was then auctioned on eBay for high prices (significantly five digits). He later also showed how to make Airpods Pro Sustainable (because repairable). The so -called IPH0N3 USB-C Protection Case is now his largest project so far, for which he (purchase of machines and more) has also made a significant advance payment, as he was in one YouTube explanatory video executed.
The specially founded company Obsoless has already been able to sell the first three “batches” of the new shell – the arrival of the first models is only intended for those who still ordered an order in mid -September (“I agree to be patient”). However, the selection of models for which the cover will be available is large – and accordingly complex Pillonel’s logistics. So it starts with iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, also generation 11, 12, 13, 14 and SE 2 and SE 3 are covered as soon as the production orders are met. In addition, there should also be covers for “older” devices, although initially remained unclear which one would be.
Waiting for Batch 4 and 5
The IPH0N3 USB-C Protection Case costs 50 Swiss francs and is a classic bumper shell and back. A lip protects the display at the front, on the back the housing flashing (or aluminum) is completely covered to the camera area. The material is a “strong dark gray nylon 12,” writes Pillonel. The USB-C connection is carried out at the bottom right-perpendicular. As mentioned, CarPlay and data transfers are technically supported to the computer plus fast charging (fast charging). Other accessories that need electricity from the iPhone (such as audio, screens or external storage media) do not work with the shell, since these apple adapter require.
If you are interested in a fourth or fifth batch of the USB-C cover, you can register by email. According to the Pillonel, the most requested models are manufactured with higher priority. Magsafe for wireless charging also masters the case – the magnet should even be stronger than without a shell.
