The open source tool whiskey loses the main developer: Whiskey should no longer receive any further functional innovations, as the developer Isaac Marovitz announced. So there will be no upgrade to newer Wine versions and no more important adjustments to better perform Windows games and applications on the Mac. Accordingly, it is possible at any time that games and apps suddenly “no longer work”, emphasizes Marovitz.
If an upcoming MacOS update puts the whiskey app out of action, as MacOS 15.4 did, he will “occasionally” improve, but will improve it, promises the maintainer.
Whiskey brings Windows games from Steam to the Mac
Whiskey is a graphical user interface to install the Wine and Apple’s Wine and Apple “Game Porting Toolkit” (AGPT) very conveniently on MacOS. The software is specially designed to install Windows games via Steam on the Mac and is therefore a free alternative to the chargeable top dog crossover.
The Game Porting Toolkit is actually intended for Windows-focused game studios to test running skills on Macs before adjustments to Apple’s metal graphics system are made.
Developer: threat to the further development of Wine for MacOS
He lost interest in the whiskey project because it “eats an incredible amount of time” and he is not paid for it, writes Marovitz, who is still a student. In addition, the developer assumes that such a free tool is ultimately detrimental to the Wine community. The further development of the runtime environment is difficult enough, especially for MacOS, specific adjustments are required and there are only a few developers with the necessary knowledge.
Without the commercial software crossover, there is ultimately no Wine on the Mac anymore and no Apple Game Porting Toolkit, says Marovitz. The free whiskey is based on crossover, but does not contribute a “tailor -made fixes” to Wine because he lacks time and knowledge, according to the developer. This is not a “fair trade” and whiskey a shame ultimately Wine on the Mac.
