From expensive sports cars and SUVs to small format: Hyundais coming Ioniq 3 could be the next vehicle that receives Apple’s long-awaited, deeper iPhone integration CarPlay Ultra. So far, these have only been available in very exclusive realms – the current Aston Martin vehicles. Like the British Automagazin Top Gear reportedthe new Hyundai should be “digital-oriented” and can use CarPlay Ultra from Apple “if the driver wishes”. This means that the dashboard can be missed, among other things, a different look that comes from CarPlay Ultra, and deeper integrations of vehicle control – such as air conditioning – are also planned.
Hyundai is already on the list
So far, CarPlay Ultra has been rejected in the auto industry. The reason: The companies fear, Apple’s stronger takeover of the vehicle interface can weaken their own brand. For example, neither Volvo nor its electric sister Polestar, nor Mercedes, Audi or Renault want to participate. Apple had once called 14 interested brands, including those who no longer seem to want to. Porsche is still there, Hyundai was recently called Kia and Genesis brands.
In fact, the slow approach is reminiscent of the introduction of CarPlay from 2014. At that time, only individual brands were ready to implement the technology, the situation was similar with the competitor Android Auto. In the meantime, more vehicles with CarPlay are coming than without, whereby there are large exceptions such as General Motors’ electric vehicles and the Tesla-Stromer. GM wants to set its own accents with its own UI, Tesla considers the vehicle surface to be its core business.
Ioniq 3 should be cheap
The Ioniq 3 is designed as a small, cheap electric car for the city. According to Top Gear, the range is up to 590 kilometers, if only in the more expensive variants (according to WLTP). The car creates 100 km/h in around 8 seconds, comes with a 400-volt system and loads a little slower than its siblings Ioniq 5, 6 and 9. It is related to the KIA EV3.
The vehicle is apparently built in Turkey. The information from Top Gear comes from Hyundai-European chief Xavier Martinet. The Ioniq 3 is scheduled to come onto the market next year. Prices have not yet been determined. The car should be on the IAA in Munich To be seen that starts next week.
