PWM function for iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max-120 Hertz for everyone

Apple’s new iPhones bring some changes to the built -in screens, which were positively received by market observers. However, these do not affect all models- as usual, the group makes distinctions between the pro and standard devices. An intermediate ending is the new iPhone Air form factor: Apple installs the high-end chip A19 Pro (but with one GPU core less), but the screen is more based on the standard model iPhone 17, whereby it is 0.2 inches larger here (6.5 instead of 6.3).

With the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, there is now a separate switch in iOS 26, with which you can switch off the so -called pulse width modulation, PWM for short. This can be found in the area of ​​the screen and text size in the area of ​​settings for the operating aids. When the PWM is turned off, the OLED display is dimmed in a different way, which according to Apple enables a “softer screen output” at lower brightness levels. Users to whom the regular OLED image occurs too harsh due to visual impairment or visual disease should try the setting.

However, the manufacturer warns, this can lead to a “lower performance on low brightness”, if only under “certain conditions”. PWM is used to quickly switch on and off the pixels (pixels), which also helps that OLEDs represent a very dark black. However, there are people who perceive this as flickers (including headache and eye pain) and therefore want to turn off the function. With iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max this is now possible for the first time. Why does the other two models not (yet?) Won’t work unclear.

It is very commendable that Apple is now equipping all iPhone 17 variants including iPhone Air with “Promotion” displays. These are screens that can be regulated from 1 to 120 Hertz. This ensures softer scrolling and games.

In addition, an Always-on screen can be realized, which only has to refresh again per second. So far, the function has only been reserved for the Pro models. In the future it will be a new iPhone standard.
