US users can soon no longer pay with PayPal via the Google Wallet. Google announces this change in a support document. Germany, however, is excluded: in this country, PayPal should continue to be able to deposit in the Google Wallet and use it for payment.
The background to this change is unknown, the blog entry does not provide any reasons. It is unclear at whose initiative PayPal is removed from Google Wallet – it is reasonable to suspect that PayPal has decided to do so. Why and how long the function will stay available in Germany is open.
Contactless payment directly at PayPal
The change is particularly interesting because PayPal is currently working on its own contactless payment method that can be used to pay directly via the PayPal app. So far, this feature has been introduced exclusively in Germany, and there is no function in the USA.
This is useful for users of iPhones who have so far not been able to integrate PayPal into the Apple Wallet. In the future, Android users will have the choice in Germany whether they want to select PayPal in the Google Wallet or select PayPal as a standard wallet-at least if the PayPal integration in the Google Wallet actually remains in the long term.
For US users, June 13, the deadline is, it emerges from the support entry. The possibility of storing PayPal in the Google Wallet was switched off there in April. Existing links will be cut on June 13, Google writes. “If you have set up recurring payments or subscriptions from other providers than Google with your linked PayPal account, update your payment method for these companies as soon as possible to avoid problems.”
