Passkeys: Microsoft presses new customers registration without a password

On the occasion of the World Password Day on May 1st, Microsoft proclaimed the end of the passwords for new customers. Accordingly, the company has In his announcement renamed the “World Password Day” into the “World Passkey Day”.

Nothing changes for existing customers at first: If you use a password for your Microsoft account, you can continue to use it. However, the option has been available for a while to delete your password and switch to passwordless logins such as Passkeys.

In order to make it easier to switch, the manufacturer announced “modern, simpler log-in and registration dialogues” for Windows, Xbox, Microsoft 365 and other offers. The new login logic introduced with the redesign should enable a better process for passwordless and key-free use.

New users are offered several password -free options for registration with their account and never have to enter a password. Instead of entering a password “only safer methods such as Passkeys, push notifications and security key”, you will be placed for the log-in, the company writes.

Microsoft also explains that the company simplifies registration with safer options. Instead of displaying all possible registration methods, the system automatically recognizes the best available method for a respective account and defines it as a standard.

For example, if a password and a one-off code for an account has been set up, the user will in future be asked to register with the one-time code using an authenticator app instead of the stored password. The next time you register, users would be asked to register with a Passkey, says Microsoft.
