New beta, new excitement: Apple has changed another classic Mac icon radically, which has been an integral part of the operating system for 25 years. The preliminary version of MacOS 26 Taoe, which is now intended for developers, replaces the hard drive icon for the “Macintosh HD” start drive with an icon, which apparently represents an external SSD. This is adorned by an oversized Apple logo, strange ports and also looks incredible.
Apple had to defuse new Finder-icon
Like iOS 26 & Co, MacOS 26 relies on a “Liquid Glass” material for the new user interface. The design change is accompanied by a redesign of numerous icons of system tools and Apple apps. In addition to “Macintosh HD”, Apple has also revised the other drive icons, which are about external drives and connected servers on the desk. The hard drive icon was present for a long time by default and therefore very prominently present on every Mac desktop. In the meantime, it is only an option for new installations from MacOS. Newer Mac users are often not particularly familiar with this.
In social media and forums, long-standing users reacted to the new Macintosh-HD-icon. Both the large logo and the wrong -effect perspective affect incomprehension. It is the second time that an icon change during the MacOS 26 beta triggers violent reactions: in Beta 1 the Finder icon, a Mac veteran, changed suddenly its shading. After an outcry, Apple immediately turned back the change.
Many discussions about Apple’s Liquid Glass
Liquid Glass and the Icon renovations have been causing heated discussions for weeks. Especially in MacOS 26 TAHOE, the new design in several places does not work until the end. Critics rarely criticize the new glass look, but rather conceptual problems, for example when active interface elements are no longer clear than such.
Liquid Glass continues to ensure situations in which buttons or text elements are difficult or not even readable. Apple apparently still experimented a lot in the betas that sometimes have significant changes from version to version. Developers are increasingly frustrated because they cannot recognize a clear design line. iOS 26, Ipados 26 and MacOS 26 are expected to appear for the general public in mid -September, and a public beta is already available.
