MacOS 26 TAHOO: redesign and new version scheme

Apple has announced the next version of the MAC operating system on the WWDC 2025 keynote. As was assumed last week, Apple continues to award names with reference to California: The upcoming version is called MacOS TAHOE. The namesake is the largest mountain lake in North America, Lake Tahoe on the border between California and Nevada.

In addition, Apple changes to the version scheme to annual numbers instead of ongoing numbers. Instead of MacOS 16, the next upgrade will be called MacOS 26.

The glass WWDC logo has already indicated it: Apple modernizes the interface of MacOS and makes it a little more plastic with a translucent glass look as well as light, shadow and glass-like distortions on the window edges and controls. The design called “Liquid Glass” is inspired by Visionos and will be similar to all systems. Not only the windows consistently show macOS glasses, but also icons, buttons and menus. There are also more animations. A special “Clear Look” gives the entire OS a continuous glass look on request and does without colors. Symbols and texts then look as engraved in glass. There is also a special dark mode known from iOS, with single -colored icons.

The last major revision with MacOS 11 Big Sur in 2020, where Apple had also largely said goodbye to plastic elements such as buttons on the Mac.

Apple Intelligence has hardly been able to convince after various updates since the performance last year. Siri is said to have been slightly improved in the new systems, but at the completely revised Siri, Apple puts off the users – as suspected – to another year. Apple Intelligence supports some other languages and developers can access the local Large Language Model from Apple for the first time via the “Foundations Models Framework” and use them in their apps. App Intents app can be integrated into Apple Intelligence, for example, to search for marked image elements via Visual Intelligence.

This message will be added to further details in the course of the evening. In the live ticker you will find out promptly what Apple is presenting on the keynote.
