Apple seems to initiate the end of the support for the once popular Fire Wire interface for MacOS 26 alias Tahoe. The beta tester of the operating system reports. According to design expert Stephen Hackett, the Monday Tests with adapters And made an FW-800 hard drive, MacOS 26 simply no longer recognizes these media. It initially remained unclear which beta was concerned from Tahoe and whether this is also affected. Apple had published the third Developer Pre-version last night.
Not an easy set-up, but it works-with MacOS 15
Under MacOS 15, access to the FW-800 medium is still possible. This was tested with a MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 5. However, two adapters are necessary for connection: Thunderbolt 3 according to Thunderbolt 2 Plus Thunderbolt 2 according to Firewire 800. This implementer offers or bot Apple itself. Hackets was also a bus powered, so it did not have its own power supply. Nevertheless, the plate appeared in the MacOS 15 finder as desired and could be used. The Fire Wire connection created in this way was also read in the system information.
On the other hand, nothing happened under MacOS 26. It already results from the fact that Apple could give up the FireWire support in Taoe from the fact that the system information there in Developer Beta 3 no longer includes a firewire entry, it is simply listed. Interestingly, the MAC at least recognized the Firewire adapter, which was listed under Thunderbolt. Another connection to the medium hanging on the adapter was not possible.
Apple has so far remained silent: bye after 30 years?
Apple was once a great advocate of Firewire, which was much faster than USB-A. For example, the group has equipped its MP3 player Ipod with the interface, which enabled fleet transmissions of the Mac music collection. Firewire 800 was introduced in 2003 and offered a transmission speed of less than 800 Mbit per second (fullduplex).
The actual FireWire standard, also known as Firewire 400, debut halfway format at half-speed (half-duplex) as early as 1995. In addition to Apple, Sony, Panasonic and other component manufacturers were also involved. Apple has not yet officially given any information as to whether Firewire is actually removed from MacOS 26. The public release of the new operating system will appear in autumn.
