While there was an ultra variant from Apple’s M1, M2 and M3 chips, which bundles two of the SoCs using silicone interposer (“Ultrafusion Interconnect”), there has so far been no such version of the current M4. Instead, Apple offers the current Mac Studio, published last March, either with M4 Max or M3 Ultra – quite confusing for buyers. A report of the American MacWorld According to a M4 Ultra, it could follow. This is evident at least from code leaks that the magazine wants to have discovered in internal Apple material.
Did Apple fix the M4-Ultra problem?
Author Filipe Esposito writes in the exclusive report that there is “evidence” in Apple’s own code that an M4 ultra-upgrade is planned-for a new Mac Pro model. This is currently completely out of date: Apple last equipped it with an M2 Ultra in June 2023, i.e. over two years ago. Since then, professionals have been waiting for an updated variant of the extensive workstation, but only the Mac Studio has been equipped with newer chips.
According to MacWorld, a new high-end MAC Pro computer houses a chip with the internal identifier T8152 with the code name “Hidra”. This fits an “M4 Ultra” that has not yet been on the market. Most recently it was said in January 2025 in one Report from BloombergApple will expand the M4 chip family by an ultra model. But nothing came of it. Instead, Apple brought the unusual combination of M4 Max and M3 Ultra in the Mac Studio, while the Mac Pro remained unchanged. It is unclear why Apple was unable to get an ultrafusion-interconnect variant of the M4 Max-an “M4 Extreme” variant that two ultras would have combined is said to have been declared internally after there were supposedly difficulties with the manufacturing process.
M5 in the Mac from next year
But now some time went into the country – and finished TSMC could have fixed it. A Mac Pro with M4 Ultra would probably have at least 32 CPU cores and up to 80 GPU cores-and start with 96 GB of RAM, writes the MacWorld. Observers had actually expected Apple to equip the next Mac Pro with the M5 processor, which was expected for the first time for autumn, which will initially only be installed in the iPad Pro before it ends up in the first Macs in spring.
However, the M4 Ultra would possibly be attractive enough to at least move professionals to buy. Apple has only a very exclusive target group with the Mac Pro anyway: The current entry price as a tower is at the manufacturer at a whopping and writing 8299 euros.
