As part of Apple’s Continuity function, content can already be easily and quickly passed between the iPhone, Mac and iPad as long as the systems use the same Apple account and are near each other. With the next operating system updates from autumn, this will be improved again in the area of telephony: IPAD and MAC receive their own telephone app for the first time as part of IPADOS 26 and MacOS 26. This allows you to make WLAN calls into the fixed and mobile network as long as an iPhone is nearby. In the Phone application, all incoming and outgoing phone calls, voice messages and contacts including Apple’s new overview function end up. The iPad and Mac version has the same range of functions as the telephony application on the iPhone.
Better calls thanks to AI
This means that three new features that Apple has implemented using AI are also integrated: the so-called call screening, a live translation function and the hold assist. Call screening means that calls of unknown contacts are automatically accepted if you wish. The iPhone (or the Mac or the iPad) then asks for the name of the caller and the purpose of the call. This is then shown in writing to the user on the display – and he can decide whether he is actually going.
The live translation combines a transcribing of a foreign language (which also works in Facetime video calls) including translation with Audio: This means that the words of both communication partners are translated and sent on the management. Apple’s demo on the 2025 WWDC sounded in German to be reasonably robotic.
The third new function, the holding assist, should be particularly useful: the device uses AI to recognize that you are in a queue and wait for the user without disturbing it. If someone comes to the phone, he is asked for a moment – and the user can withdraw. Both call screening and holding assist are initially only available in English.
Spam avoidance in the news app
The message app also gets more AI and better sorting. Apple automatically sorts messages into its own folder in the future and does not give any notification on request. So that no important messages are lost. For example, messages of delivery services or two-factor codes previously unknown numbers should be able to automatically recognize them.
Time critical is then put through, whereby it remains to be hoped that the attacker will not take advantage of the future so that your message will be flushed up. In fact, Apple Intelligence already has problems with it, for example, PHISHING messages by email praises as important.
