Apple is now launching a new generation of M chips every year. This time it is MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Vision Pro that are the first to receive the new M5. In addition to solid performance gains in the processor, the focus is on a revised GPU, which is now also supposed to execute AI tasks more efficiently through Neural Accelerators. The basic chip now already delivers a performance for which you previously had to resort to the Pro and Max versions. The latter are still pending in the M5.
In episode 107, Malte Kirchner and Leo Becker take a detailed look at the three new devices and the first test experiences. We discuss what makes the M5 stand out and what it reveals about Apple’s late AI strategy. We are also concerned with who devices like the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro still make sense for when Apple’s cheaper alternatives have long since delivered a similar amount of performance. Of course, the Vision Pro M5 is also a topic – and sparks the discussion as to whether this device category has not long since reached a dead end.
