LibreOffice 25.8: Many new PDF 2.0 features

LibreOffice 25.8 is released: The free office suite brings numerous improvements and new functions for Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw and other updates under the hood. The most important updates include integrating other PDF-2.0 features, such as AES-256 encryption, support for PDF/A-4 and the export of documents as PDF 2.0.

In the word processing program WRITER, users can control the behavior of the syllable separation at the end of the side. LibreOffice can either separate words on the last line of a page or instead completely move the affected line to the following page. In addition, users can record their changes individually, restore and understand – so far, this has only been activated for individual documents, but not for users. Furthermore, rejecting a change no longer leads to the full disappearance of the proposal, they can now be found in the course of the document.

Many new table functions were integrated in Calc, such as column selection, selection, expand, omit and many more. For the ‘TextIbport’ dialog, there are now check boxes ‘always show’ when importing, which is set by default. If you often import CSV files into the spreadsheet with stored settings, you can switch off the dialog. The associated settings can be found under ‘Edit filter settings’ in the ‘Open’ file dialog.

The application-wide viewer mode is completely new. It opens files in writing -protected mode, users have no processing tools available. In addition, as with every release, the developers have improved the filters for import and export to increase compatibility with Microsoft Office. The same applies to the speed of the programs, large documents should now be loaded faster.

However, the support of old operating systems is also eliminated with LibreOffice 25.8: Support for Windows 7 and 8 and 8.1 has removed the project and will also no longer develop the 32-bit Windows Builds. In addition, the release will be the last one for MacOS 10.15, the upcoming LibreOffice 26.2 will at least require MacOS 11. All changes to the new version The detailed release notes on. Here you can also find an outlook on experimental features, including a new ‘macro manager’ and a new mode of password-based ODF encryption.
