A look at the Counterpoint numbers To the smartphone sales of the first quarter of 2025 Shows that Apple’s iPhone 16 standard model was the best-selling cell phone in the world. This should also have had to do with the fact that the device is comparatively attractive and, unlike earlier generations, comes with current chip technology, Apple’s A18. However, this could not stay that way with the successor iPhone 17. As the well-known Apple analyst Jeff PU from GF Securities from Hong Kong claims to have heard, Apple is supposed to return to the old device policy: the standard model receives the SOC from the previous year.
Old technology in iPhone 17?
Accordingly, the iPhone 17 should remain equipped with the old A18, manufactured in the TSMC 3-NM process of the second generation (N3E). Even with RAM, it is supposedly only 8 GB as far as before. Apple would thus delimit the iPhone 17 more from the other new models, all of which should receive the newer A19. These are particularly thin iPhone 17 Air (A19), the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max (each A19 Pro with more cores). The third generation 3-NM process (N3P) is used for this, it promises a little more power and a little less power consumption than the previous technology. Apple is currently planning 12 GB instead of 8 GB on Ram, PU claims.
Apple had made a separation between its pro and standard models for years. The pro variants not only received improved camera technology with an additional sensor, but also the latest SoC generation. It was different with the iPhone 16: Here, iPhone 16 and 16 plus the A18 and iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max received the A18 Pro. Main difference: fewer GPU cores. At the iPhone 17, Apple now seems to want to return to the old model, although there should only be a standard model, because the plus model is said to be replaced by the Air.
Slightly enlarged screen
After all, there should be an improvement in the iPhone 17: The well-known display expert Ross Young recently announced to X that he had heard from the supply chain that Apple Switch from a 6.1-inch umbrella to a 6.3-inch model want. This screen size is currently used in the iPhone 16 Pro.
As usual, the new iPhone models are expected in September. With the iPhone 17 Air, which may also receive a different name, Apple has been making major changes to the form factor for the first time since the iPhone 12 Mini.
