iPhone 17 Air: Did Apple want to build his first socket -free smartphone?

Steve Jobs didn't like cables, the legend goes – and that is said to have shaped Apple. The iPhone producer was one of the first providers of mobile phones that have painted the jack socket for headphones, something that other companies dented to the group. At the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, Apple is said to have planned to launch its first cell phone without connections.

That was one of the ideas for the ultra -flat device that is expected in September, wrote Bloomberg recently. The USB-C connection would also have been removed and the charging and the synchronization would have been carried out wirelessly-via Magsafe (electricity) and WLAN or 5G (data). After all, this is not new to Apple, for example, the Apple Watch has long since used wireless charging puck and has not a single socket. However, Apple is said to have decided against it. One of the main reasons was not to straighten the EU regulation into a new conflict, because it had determined USB-C as the standard interface.

Nevertheless, according to the report, the iPhone 17 Air represents a fundamental change in Apple towards a new industrial design. “Apple managers say that if this new iPhone is successful, the company intends to try again to produce port-free iPhones and to switch more of its models to a slimmer approach,” said Bloomberg. However, previous forms of form factor-in particular the two iPhone mini models 12 and 13-also sold worse than hoped for. Some users will also wait for the first iPhone foldable to finally appear in 2026 or 2027.

However, Apple's concerns about a USB-Cless iPhone probably seem to be unfounded. When asked by the EU Commission, it was also said this week that, according to the “Common Charger Directive”, only devices need a USB-C connection that charged via a wire -bound connection become.

If this power supply is completely missing, it can also be Magsafe & Co. But possibly Apple wanted to be overly cautious, after all, Brussels now make the micro manager for the iPhone.
