iPad with folding could appear in 2028

It would be a dream for some users: a foldable iPad that is also a Mac. Apple has seemed to be pursuing this idea for a long time, there have been rumors for years. But now it looks like that it still takes at least 2028. This message comes from the usually well-informed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from the Taiwanese Investmenthaus TF International Securities. In a note published this week to investors he writesthe device can be expected in 2028.

One of the suppliers of components is therefore General Interface Solution (GIS), where you had already worked on the Vision Pro. The company from Taiwan will allegedly build so-called Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) in cooperation with Apple’s regular suppliers Corning-whereby GIS should be responsible for edge treatment, cut, inspection and packaging. In his note, Kuo confirmed the date of an iPhone Foldable for 2026. It is expected together with the iPhone 18 in autumn if something should not come in.

When it comes to iPad Foldable, Kuo is more pessimistic as mentioned. Most recently, another analyst that was considered reliably, Jeff PU from GF Securities from Hong Kong, claimed that Apple will come out in 2027. That was already a shift after some rumors had hoped that foldable iPad and foldable iPhone could be released in autumn 2026. Another Apple observer, Mark Gurman von Bloomberg, also types more on 2028 instead of 2027. A kind of “gigantic iPad”, which is as large as two iPad Pro models, is planned.

According to Kuo, GIS is preparing to prepare his backend processing for the ultra-thin iPad Foldable glass. This could then be delivered between the end of 2027 and early 2028. The company plays an important role, since UTG is very susceptible to the break. In contrast to ordinary smartphone glass, it is up to four times more expensive. It is obvious to make the iPad Foldable particularly durable. The first foldable smartphones had initially fought with great durability difficulties. With a large iPad, this is still a bigger topic.

It remains uncertain whether the device is really an iPad or a MacBook with a folding screen. Apple always emphasizes that it wants to keep both product lines apart, but the design of MacOS and iPados is increasing more and more.
