IOS 19, IPADOS 19, MacOS 16: New look is called “Solarium” internally

A solarium is not only a device under which you lie down for tanning purposes, but in the original sense also the space of a house that is made of glass to let through as much sunlight as possible. It also seems to serve as inspiration for Apple’s redesign in iOS 19. Like Bloomberg author Mark Gurman in his Newsletter from the weekend writes, bears the new look, which is also to reach Ipados 19 and MacOS 16, this internal name. “Solarium” stands for “a room with glass walls and a blanket that lets in natural light”.

According to Gurman, the redesign has been the greatest redesign for years-allegedly since iOS 7, which had also redesigned ex-design chief Jony IVE. The Bloomberg reporter once again rejects a cancellation. “These latest mock-ups could be replicas of IOS 19 of a few months ago, possibly from an employee who has no access to the full extent of the upcoming changes.” Because Apple does not give all employees all changes. Alternatively, the pictures could also be a fake, says Gurman.

Apple plans to present the new Design for WWDC in June. This year’s developer conference, which is once again held online, starts on June 9th. The look should be inspired by Visionos, but go beyond. It is about a “dramatic redesign, both with the look and the functioning of the software,” emphasizes Gurman. The previous mock-ups did not represent what was shown for the WWDC. Gurman, in particular In an “exclusive first look” had spread.

If Gurman’s report is correct, this could cause larger controversy in particular under MacOS. The MAC operating system can be configured much more extensively than what is known from iOS and iPados.

Apple had repeatedly adjusted the look over the years, but never fully combined the surface with iOS or iPados – also because it places different demands on the usability. How and whether this changes with “solarium” remains to be seen.
