iOS 18.4.1, MacOS 15.4.1 & Co: Apple provides emergency patches for several systems

Emergency updates for iPhones, iPads and Macs: Apple eliminates two heavy security gaps in its operating systems with the new versions iOS 18.4.1, Ipados 18.4.1 and MacOS 15.4.1 Sequoia. Users should import the updates immediately.

The weak points apparently enable attackers to carry out targeted and “extremely sophisticated attacks” on individual iPhone users, As the manufacturer noted with reference to a report. No further details of these attacks were given. Usually, these are commercial spyware that is used by government agencies against target persons.

The patches are also available with TVOS 18.4.1 for Apple TV boxes and the Vision Pro (Visionos 2.4.1). There are currently no updates for older operating system versions of iOS, iPados and MacOS and thus also certain older hardware. Whether these will follow remains open. For Ipados 17 and iOS 16 on certain older iPhones and iPads, Apple recently provided security patches. IOS 17 apparently no longer receives any further updates: All iOpen 17 can also update to iOS 18.

A memory management weak point in Coraudio made it possible to carry out code with the help of an audio stream using a manipulated media file. The weak point CVE-2025-31200 apparently discovered security researchers from Apple and Google. The second gap appears even more delicate, which made it possible for attackers with reading and wrapping to bypass the safety technology of pointer authentication codes integrated in Apple chips and thus carry out any code. The problem has been eliminated by removing the faulty code, Apple writes.

In addition to the important patches, iOS 18.4.1 is also intended to clear up a bug on iPhones that disturbed the connection to wireless carplay infotainment systems in certain vehicle models. According to Apple, the error rarely occurred.
