On the occasion of Google Photos’ 10th birthday, the photo app receives new AI functions and a redesign of the editor. Exclusive functions so far for Pixel devices have also entered the app for more users.
The Google photo app was introduced in the course of the developer conference I/O 2015 and is now a standard app on many Android devices. It can also be used on iPhones and in the browser.
New editor for Google Photos
With the revision of the processing tool, users should receive “helpful suggestions” and “powerful processing tools” at “one place”, according to the announcement.
The new view of the editor now shows information on the image such as the date, time and place in the upper area of the screen. In the lower part of the tool, the functions are located, edited, add and the trash. The Google-Lenens function, which was previously integrated into the bar, is no longer available.
With the revised editor, users should be able to use AI-based suggestions that “combine several effects for quick processing in a variety of tailor-made options”. In addition, users can tap certain parts of an image, whereupon tools appear for processing this area.
So far exclusive pixel functions: “Reimagine” and “Auto-Frame” for almost everyone
In addition, Google Tools such as “Reimagine” (in German: “Redesign”) and “Auto Frame”, which were initially only introduced for the Pixel 9 series. In the future, these will be available for all smartphones with Android 8 and new as well as iPhones. For Android users, the functions in the course of the coming weeks, for iPhones, should find an app update over the course of the year.
With the “Reimagine” function, objects and backgrounds can be changed in photos with text instructions and generative AI. Among other things, a dark sky can be replaced by a “clear blue sky”, explains Google.
The image section of an image can be changed using the “Automatic frame” function. If the image is to be enlarged, generative AI helps to fill empty places appropriately.
Fast parts of albums with QR code
According to Google, the codes generated in the app can also be used for group events. Anyone who has the code can look at the photos and also add new to the album via a QR code shared or printed over the smartphone.
