In Firefox, tabs can now be organized in groups. The high -demand function is part of the new version 138, which is now available. New groups can simply set up users: they simply pull a tab to another, then the browser presents a suitable menu. In it, the name of the group – for example its purpose, a topic or a date – and a color can be assigned. The name is optional.
If users want to remove a tab out of a group again, you can simply pull it into the tab bar with a drag-and-drop. Groups can be further configured with one click, for example, to open a new tab directly in a group, to outsource the entire group into a new browser window, save and close the group, to remove or remove them from it. Groups can be moved in the tab bar like conventional tabs.
Simple’s management
The TAB menu also shows an overview of the existing groups and the tabs they contain. The new groups also work with the recently introduced vertical tab mode and existing add-ons to manage tabs. In the future, Mozilla wants to give third developers with new APIs third-party function so that Firefox extensions can handle them correctly. Even nowadays, a AI assistant should not be missing that runs locally and is already included in the Nightly version. He should further simplify the management of tabs, but there are no details of this yet.
Mozilla itself points out that the tab groups were one of the most requested functions by the users. Since 2022, the request for you on the Community platform Connect has existed with thousands of votes for the feature. The developers have according to their own statements Try to implement these wishes as well as possible – whereby the ideas of the users partly contradicted themselves. That is why Mozilla wants to identify the needs behind the wishes expressed and then installed it in Firefox.
New profile management
At the same time, Firefox introduces a new profile management: With it, users can configure their browser for different purposes, for example for work and the private or especially for shopping. When the browser starts, the right profile can be selected, then the bookmarks stored here and the course and, if necessary, the data synchronized via the Mozilla account are available. However, the settings for data protection and privacy are separate from the profiles.
In addition, the developers have made several security fixes and many minor changes. Details for you can be found in the Release Notes of the new version 138. Mozilla also warns user that the import assistant no longer takes over passwords from chrome and chromium-based browsers in some cases. Affected users have to export their passwords as a CSV file and import manages manually via the Firefox Password Manager.
Google has also updated its Chrome browser, Version 136 In addition to bug and security fixes, however, no larger new functions.
