Apple has given its video recording app Final Cut Camera a larger update. Version 2 is suitable for the new iPhone 17 Pro, but also has improvements for other models. Apple also announced support for Genlock (also via API) and PRORES RAW videos (DITO).
Open gate recordings with the iPhone
Final Cut Camera is for free And serves to read videos from the iPhone directly in Final Cut Pro. Version 2.0 appears this month and runs from the iPhone XS or newer and from iOS 18.6 – whereby some functions need at least iOS 26. In addition, of course, all hardware features are only available on the devices that they also support. With iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, PRORES RAW recordings can be taken directly in the future.
The format allows maximum post-processing, since RAW data is recorded directly by the camera sensor. In addition, open gate recordings are new-you can always take the total resolution of the camera sensor with you and not just DCI 4K. This is useful, for example, for social media high-cant videos if you have filmed in landscape format. Subsequent stabilization is also easier- according to Apple all of this without quality and performance losses. PRORES RAW recordings from the iPhone are supported with the updates to Final Cut Pro for Mac 11.2 and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3. Apple promises direct adjustments from color temperature and color. DE-MOSAIC-INS and exposure changes.
Timecode, Log 2, Genlock plus new hardware from Blackmagic Design
Recordings with Apple Log 2 on the iPhone 17 Pro are also possible, both can be used in Prores and HEVC. Log-2 luts for Final Cut Pro (Mac and iPhone) can then be put over it. Furthermore, a timecode function with the time of day and recording is new. This can also be set externally, whereby Apple has not yet given any more detailed information on supported devices. Finally, the update also copes with the 200 mm “telephoto lens” of the iPhone 17 Pro and thus creates 4K with 60 fps.
A genlock function is also available for the first time on an iPhone. The PRO models can synchronize recording devices with reference signals, for example for effects such as bulletime. This is intended to make image -precise cuts possible. Additional hardware from Blackmagic Design has already been announced: that Prodock Supports the function via Apple’s Genlock-API.
