FAQ: iCloud and end-to-end encryption come under pressure

Without going into it, Apple announced at the end of February that the extended end-to-end encryption for iCloud users in Great Britain would be switched off. Specifically, this is an optional function that is called “extended data protection” in iOS. Some iCloud data remain encrypted consistently, the company emphasized (see “How well protects Apple in iCloud?”).

At the same time, Apple repeated a very clear promise: “We have emphasized several times in the past that we have never created a back door or a master key for any of our products or services and we will never do so either.”
