Apple has made some changes in the power supply to the new iPhone-17 models and the iPhone Air. In the future, all devices with the exception of a series with Qi2.2 and a maximum of 25 watts inductive – and Apple has invented a new power supply that promises dynamic charging power. However, the latter has a horse’s foot.
Magsafe: that works and that doesn’t work
It was already possible to charge devices of the iPhone 16 series with a special Magsafe charging puck with up to 25 watts. However, this proproe – Apple was supplemented by new models together with the presentation of his new smartphones. These come in variants with one meter length and two meters in length (The Apple Online Store Down is currently). The prices are 49 and 59 euros. Main renewal: Qi2.2 is also supported for other devices outside the Apple universe, which in turn brings with the said 25 watt charging capacity. It was initially unclear whether there will be a firmware upgrade for the previous version.
iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will come from the start of sales next week with Qi2.2 support. Owners of the iPhone-16 devices, on the other hand, have to update to iOS 26 that get the technology onto the devices. The iPhone Air remains on the outside. For technical reasons, this dominates only a maximum of 20 watts of fast Magsafe shop, as from the technical specifications emerges. As usual, a suitable power supply is needed-it must always be above the Magsafe wattage (here: 30 watts or higher). After all, with 20 watts there are 50 percent charging in 30 minutes via Qi2.2 (for a 30-watt power supply). This is also possible via USB-C cable, here a 20-watt power supply is enough.
Dynamic shop, but not with us
There is also an interesting innovation when charging the new iPhones. The models 17, 17 per and 17 Pro Max can be charged 50 percent in 20 minutes by means of a compatible charger. This must have at least 40 watts. Via Magsafe (with the new loading pucks), a 30-watt power supply for a 50 percent charging in 30 minutes is enough, Apple says.
A special charger is brand new, the Apple but only launched in individual regions Has: The so-called 40W-dynamic power adapter with 60W max, as Apple describes it. The idea behind the $ 39 (Plus Sales Tax) is that it can offer a peak charging capacity of 60 watts, but only call it up dynamically (and briefly, because of the thermal design), i.e. only if really necessary. This has the advantage that the device is slightly smaller than typical 60 watt loaders. The group could not tell us why Apple does not offer an EU version of this.
