Apple has started to allow the first alternative translation programs as a default app for the iPhone. The feature was first introduced in the EU at the end of March 18.4 at the end of March. However, Apple itself has to approve the apps, for which the group sometimes takes a lot of time.
Google Translate from Deepl overtaken
The first external translation app that can be defined for the standard application is that iOS application of the Cologne company Deepl SE. It currently dominates over 30 languages, with only a third of it can also be recognized in photos. There is also text-to-speech and a file translation.
Interestingly, Deep has overtaken Google Translate in his approach. If this application is on the iPhone, it is not yet defined as a default app. It was initially unclear whether this is due to Google or Apple. At Deepl you should make sure to install both iOS 18.4 and the latest version of the app (25.7).
More and more default apps can be defined
Apple now also allows standard navigation apps, browsers as well as telephony and text messages. In the latter fields, WhatsApp from Meta was ahead, Signal is still missing. However, Sipgate’s German apps Clinq and Satellite can already be set for phone calls.
Apple is forced to open its default apps by regulating the EU Commission, but also voluntarily takes place in other markets. The group apparently wants to prevent further competition law difficulties.
Sometimes it still hooks at Apple
The Lower Saxony e-mail company Tutao with its Tuta app recently complained about problems to be able to add their mail app to the default offer. Apple simply did not respond to appropriate inquiries.
According to press reports, however, it went quite quickly and there was a contact. Tutao had previously threatened to inform the EU Commission based on the Digital Market Act and to submit a complaint. “Our users have the right to choose any e-mail provider as a standard mail app on iOS,” said the company.
