Liquid Glass – a conceptual restart
The new design system not only changes the look-and-feeling, but also the component design and navigation logic. On the net, observers speculate that Apple is preparing other AR products-perhaps real AR glasses. That remains to be seen. Likewise, the practice still has to show whether the new “fundamental visual language”, says Apple, that users convince in everyday life or only remain optical frills. Critics even compare them with Windows Vista’s Aero look. Hopefully it will not develop into a comparable flop.
The central mechanism of Liquid Glass is called Lensing. Based on real refraction, the new look conveys depth, structure and spatial logic. In contrast to the earlier “blur materials”, Lensing specifically directs the light instead of just drawing it up-a crucial difference. Transparent surfaces act like real lenses: they focus on content underneath, sprinkle specifically and create a new type of visual layering. This “optical intelligence” makes it possible to clearly separate UI components without locking them in boxes. Materiality always seems familiar – the eye intuitively recognizes what is above, what is interactive and where content is structured.
