AVIF is actually a common image format: it has been since 2019 Open specification Finalized to press pictures or image sequences with AV1 into a Heif container. For example, the competitor to Heic is supported by over 90 percent of all web browsers and has been part of the Apple operating systems since iOS 16 and MacOS-with Safari 16.4 also from MacOS 11 and MacOS 12. However, the support for some apps of the iPhone manufacturer does not go far enough: Avif images are not displayed correctly both on the Mac and iPad. On it made The Apple Blog 9to5mac attentive this week. Instead of full-scale pictures, there is only one mini preview, displaying can only be recorded via detours.

Advertisements and benefits are just not really in the news app
Anyone who sends or receives AVIF files as impersage sees a faulty rendering in the form of a preview including image name and size. However, this preview cannot be clicked, so you can't raise it. Confusingly, the preview works correctly before sending, so you can see the picture in full size before it is sent. The rendering is only broken again in the impression-i.e. chats with individuals or groups.
This is only remedied by storing the image and then displaying it in Safari or the photo app-something that very few users can understand. Since AVIF has been supported in safari and photos for two years as mentioned, these formats are also actively used in the news app-the preferred form of communication on the iPhone.
Complaint using the feedback form
It is unclear whether Apple is informed about the bug. Since it has been available in the news app for such a long time, it can be assumed. In addition to complaint reports in the press, only helps Apple as a normal user about the Product feedback form To write and hope that as many users as possible do.
Among other things, AVIF is to replace the unpopular webP format. Apple itself, however, relies on Heic, now stores iPhone images in this format. That could be one of the reasons why AVIF is currently simply overlooked.
