Apple’s ex-chief designer Jony Ive misses the “innocent euphoria” in Valley

As is well known, the times of the inventor garage culture in Silicon Valley are over. Apple’s former chief designer Jony Ive also notices a change in the thinking of the decision-makers of the big Tech companies. At the beginning of the nineties, an “innocent euphoria” of like-minded people who wanted to improve the world were primarily concerned with money and power, IVE now complained in a live stage talk by the Stripe Sessions in San Francisco. The event was aimed at the payment and financial technology scene.

IVE also heard critical tones on other occasions, most recently in February in a radio show by the British BBC. He now also spoke to a point that he called the social consequences of technology in San Francisco. If you create innovations, this can have unintentional consequences, he says. “Certain products that I was very, very involved had had some unintentional consequences that were anything but pleasant.” On earlier occasions, IVE showed that he probably refers to addictive behavior in people who are constantly using their smartphone or who are losing themselves in social media or use these channels to harm others. Knowing this is a lot, he says.

Ive lacks early ethical discussions about what technology does with people. The development is progressing too quickly to create appropriate social framework conditions. As a result, discussions often come too late.

In addition to critical thoughts, spectators receive – The conversation is also available on YouTube – insight into the work of the designer. Memories of Sundays at which he broke up his head, how an accessory cable can be ideally packed, are part of how to prepare mutual breakfast in the design team and mutual team visits at home.

Without referring directly to the criticism, IVE once again justifies the guidelines of his design philosophy. Critics held unconditional minimalism when he designed devices thinner and with fewer connections. On the other hand, he regards his work as the work out of simplicity in order to express the purpose and role of an object precisely.

Ive, who left Apple a few years ago to start his own design company, is said to plan something new in cooperation with Openaai, as can be seen in the direction of artificial intelligence, as rumors can be seen. He continues to be silent. However, there are projects that he cannot talk about at the moment, he admits: “But I look forward to being able to talk about it at some point in the future.”
