Apple wants 60 percent of its climate emissions since 2015

For today’s “Day of the Earth”, Apple has given current details on his efforts to reduce climate nuclear in its supply chain. Overall, the group now wants to have caused 60 percent fewer emissions worldwide than in 2015. This is part of a program with which the entire production by finished and suppliers is to be decarbonized by 2030. However, there was already criticism of how the group puts on-the German Environmental Aid (DUH) had sued Apple because it describes certain Apple watch models as “CO₂-neutral” and used so-called carbon offsets that are controversial. A similar lawsuit was filed in the USA in spring.

In Apple’s new “Environmental Progress Report” Among other things, it means that “more clean energy and more recycled materials are now being used than ever before”. You save water and reduce garbage “all over the world”, says environmental chief Lisa Jackson. “We also invest great in nature. The closer we get in 2030, the more tougher this work will be.” The challenge “with innovations, cooperation and urgency” is approached.

Nevertheless, Apple will continue to rely on “high quality carbon credits” – i.e. compensation payments and compensation measures. According to the group, the “real” climate emissions of the company will be lowered by 75 percent by 2030 compared to 2015. The rest – 25 percent – should bring climate compensation, the researcher regularly issue bad certificates. Because: The emission takes place and remains in the atmosphere – the compensation measure often works later.

Among other things, Apple wants to continue supplying its supply chain with green energy. Currently 17.8 gigawatts are to be available for renewable electricity. By 2030, the storm should be 100 percent “green” here. In 2024, 21.8 million tons of climate gas had already been saved, 17 percent more than last year. At the same time, the supply chain was worked on optimizations and energy -saving measures, whereby “almost 2 million tons” climate gas was not emitted.

In its report, Apple emphasizes conversion measures in industrial processes. In the construction of flat screens and semiconductors F-GHGS-fluorinated climate gas-reduced by 90 percent by 2030. This currently affects 26 of the semiconductor suppliers and “100 percent of the direct suppliers of displays”. In 2024, display and semiconductor ready for Apple are said to have not emitted 8.4 million tons of climate gases. “New obligations will accelerate this progress in the coming years,” said Apple.

At the same time, Apple wants to gain as many components of Mac, iPhone & Co. from recycling material as possible. This includes rare earths and cobalt in batteries. As part of a “Zero Waste” program for Apple’s suppliers, around 600,000 tons of garbage from landfills are said to have been kept away by landfill. There is currently “over 55 percent recycled content in the MacBook Air M4,” said Apple. Apple also describes the new Mac Mini M4 as “climate -neutral”.
