Apple has a briefly disappeared display of how much storage space for his ACI system Apple Intelligence on the Mac is used up again. This is reported by users of the youngest Beta 4 of MacOS 15.4. Now there is speculation about whether Apple really wanted to turn off the function – or it may have been only a bug.
Apple Intelligence is not undisputed
The iPhone manufacturer is currently trying to bring users to the use of Apple Intelligence, which will also be available in German from April. This includes, for example, that the function is partly back in despite the previous shutdown after an iOS update-as well as a warning dialog on the Mac when switching off, which is written in dangerous red font (which could certainly be called Dark pattern). However, there are good reasons not to use Apple Intelligence. For example, the writing tools and the image generators offer the advantage over competitive systems that they are installed directly in the system – they are (at most) equal or worse.
However, the AI system proves a lot of storage space, which can be a real problem, especially with smaller Macs or cheaper iPhones. It was correspondingly important to be able to see how much space Apple Intelligence consumes. On the Mac, this was possible until MacOS 15.3.2 without any problems if you clicked on MacOS in the system settings for the storage space display. There the AI system had its own sub-item. From MacOS 15.4 Beta 1 the entry suddenly disappeared, it was only visible how much MacOS including Apple Intelligence took on SSD-Platz.
Fixed in MacOS 15.4 Beta 4
With the appearance of MacOS 15.4 Beta 4, since last Monday has been available, the situation is now improving. If you click in the system settings, you can see again in the memory consumption area, which Apple Intelligence consumes within MacOS – and that can be over 10 GB, even if Apple has always stated that there are always be around 7 GB.
Macrumors speculates nowthat Apple had a problem with the System Protection System Integrity Protection (SIP) in the early beta versions. As it was shown, users who had explicitly deactivated SIP on developer machines, for example, could see the Apple intelligence assignment. SIP is supposed to serve that system -related programs cannot run without user consent. To deactivate SIP, you need a reboot.
