Apple extends password app support for Windows

Apple has apparently finally succeeded in running a Firefox expansion for its password app on Windows. This reports users On Reddit. However, this only seems to work for certain configurations.

Apple had launched a fresh application for password management with iOS 18, MacOS 15 and Ipados 18 in September last year. This also allows synchronization via iCloud. In order to get his passwords directly in the browser even under Windows, Apple led next to the Integration of passwords in the official PC icloud app Also own extensions for different Windows browsers.

In the beginning, however, these were only Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Then a few months later also dived one Official Firefox expansion on. However, this did not work at first – until this week. Apparently Apple had published the Firefox expansion, but had not implemented suitable routines in the iCloud for Windows app. This has now been made up for with the latest update. As usual, the passwords are not managed in the browser, but in the iCloud application. A purely browser-based password management in the style of 1 Password and other competitors does not seem to want to implement Apple.

There seems to be a problem if you use the now outdated Windows 10 on your PC. According to user reports, the Firefox extension for Apple’s password app on PCs only works from Windows 11. Apple has not given any information on whether this is still changing. In Windows 10, possible options for Firefox do not seem to appear at all.

Apple’s password app has been becoming increasingly important in recent years, because it has also mastered the use of passkeys. This form of biometric authentication is still difficult to export, which is why users stuck in a password application after starting the use. However, Apple has decided to make Passkeys exportable in the future. From autumn it should be possible for the first time to move the passwords stored in the iCloud keybund or in Apple’s password app into another password management. Exporting passwords and one-off codes is also supported, according to Apple, as well as an import.
