The Chinese company Anker Innovations, known for smartphone accessories, has started an extensive recall of a power bank. According to the manufacturer, the model called “Powercore 10000” (model number A1263) has a “potential problem with the lithium-ion battery”, which can lead to a fire risk. The recall only runs in the USA, but this power bank was and is also sold in Europe. It has so far been unclear whether the recall to other countries such as Germany is expanded.
Power banks and the integrated lithium-ion cells are particularly considered a security risk for airlines. In the past few months, more and more airlines have tightened the requirements for power banks. Passengers should no longer use them during the flight and load them. Some airlines even forbid to stow the mobile additional batteries and e-cigarettes in their luggage compartment. Due to a powder bank, which had caught fire, a fire broke out in an airport from Air Busan at the airport of the eponymous metropolis in South Korea.
1,158,000 power banks in the USA affected
Now Anker has also identified the PowerCore 10000 as a possible cause of fire. Loud Information from the USCPSCthe US Commission for Consumer Product Safety, has reported 19 cases of fire and explosions with this power bank, which led to two smaller fire injuries and eleven damage to property. Accordingly, 1,158,000 units are affected in the United States from June 2016 to December 2022.
According to the Anker website, the Anker Powercore 10000 is no longer offered in this country. It has apparently been replaced by new power bank models. However, the model with the number A1263 can still be found in stores online, for example on Amazon and Ebay. Why anchor does not call back this power bank in Europe is open. The recall may be expanded accordingly in the next few days.
Anker websites for recall actions
Anker has one for the recall in the USA own website with further information. There it is described how the model can be recognized. First there is the anchor lettering on the top, model and serial number can be found on one of the two narrow sides. If the model number A1263 is, it is the model of this power bank affected by the recall. The serial number needs anchors to identify the power bank if the customer requests an exchange model or a voucher.
In Germany, Anker also has its own Website for recall actionsbut the PowerCore 10000 has not yet been listed there. The last recall was in September 2024 and affected the power bank with the model number A1647. There was also a fire risk here because the battery can overheat.
