Apple has enabled 14 Sonoma to be pretty animated lockscreens since MacOS. However, it is not possible with on-board funds to use these animations as a desktop background. But there is different appsthat submit the function. One of them Backdrophas now been updated – and brings a special function.
Beautify the lockscreen yourself
Backdrop comes from Cindori, a small Swedish developer who is for Mac tools like Sensai or Trim Enabler is known. The freshly launched version 2.0 comes as the very first app with the possibility of not only encouraging the desktop, but also Apple’s lockscreen wallpaper-which was only granted to the MacOS manufacturer so far. “Backdrop uses a previously unknown method for creating custom video internals that are compatible with the MacOS blocking screen,” explains developer Oskar Groth.
This method was discovered by extensive reverse engineering of the MacOS background system. “The end result is an absolutely safe method of using backdrop videos as background images so that they can be played on the lock screen, just like the native recordings of Apple.” Interesting: Backdrop 2.0 backgrounds are even displayed as a separate category in the MacOS background settings. However, an auxiliary program must run in the background.
Backrop 2.0 was otherwise adapted to MacOS 26, has a new video engine that eats less performance (allegedly only 0.3 percent CPU load with GPU acceleration) and comes with an integrated community platform, which can currently be used to use over 1000 curated background videos-and also contribute with your own content if you want to.
The app costs just under $ 40 for a lifelong license. Alternatively, you can rent them for $ 2 a month or $ 15 a year. In the current start phase there is a 25 percent discount on the lifelong license. The app can be tested free of charge for seven days until you have to unlock it. The minimum requirement is a Mac with MacOS 14, because only from then on (see above) there is also support for the so-called live wallpapers.
