Apple supposedly plans a live translation function for the AirPods. In the future, the wireless earphones should be able to translate conversations into other languages in real time. The software update required for this should appear this year, according to a media report.
Like the US financial news agency Bloomberg reportedshould only be possible in combination with an iPhone with installed iOS 19. This does the translation work and then transfers the result to the AirPods. iOS 19 is expected to be presented at the WWDC in June and expected for September. Which Airpods models should master the function is not mentioned in the report, which refers to anonymous sources at Apple. In 2024, Apple released a small update of the Airpods Max with USB-C and the AirPods 4.
Other manufacturers were faster
Other manufacturers have been offering corresponding functions for years. Google integrated a translation function into its pixel buds in 2018. Live translations, which reminded of the universal translator in the TV series Star Trek, also promised the AI PIN, which was now set, who did this task with AI help.
How exactly Apple wants to realize his Airpods translations does not show from the Bloomberg report. Artificial intelligence is likely to play an important role here. However, it is unclear whether this can also be done in local processing on the device or only in the cloud. Among other things, the latency times depend on which users have to adjust.
Greater revision in iOS 19
The AirPods expansion should be part of a larger revision of the Apple operating systems. Among other things, a more extensive redesign of iOS 19 is under discussion. Apple also works in parallel on new Airpods hardware. Rumors are based on Airpods Pro of the third generation. Models with a built -in camera were also repeated.
Extensions of the AirPods via software update already have a tradition at Apple. Finally, a hearing aid function and hearing tests were added to the second generation Airpods.
