It was a big victory: Epic Games had convinced a US judge that Apple does not stick to rules to open its app store platform for other payment forms. While Spotify and Amazon have already been successfully submitted and approved their apps, with which users can now buy content or subscription directly on the web (and thus without a commission for Apple that the developers have had to pay so far), lack Epic’s big game “Fortnite”. And nothing has happened here for several days.
Huge dispute for five years
For Apple’s app review, “Fortnite” with web purchase has already been submitted Last Friday (May 9). But the app store operator does not seem to hurry up. Epic boss Tim Sweeney announced on Tuesday that it “No news” To “Fortnite” for iOS. The iPhone application had already flown out of the App Store in 2020 because Epic had tried to integrate its own payment options, which violates Apple’s rules. Later, Epic also decided not to update the Mac version.
.
A large legal dispute over several continents developed between Epic and Apple. The preliminary climax was the decision of a judge in California that Apple must not participate in web purchases, i.e. also a 27 percent commission. Apple even “lied to”, said Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. The group should not earn off on off-app purchases.
Not just guns
It is unclear why Apple is not simply waving through “Fortnite” – this was actually expected by observers who expected Apple to react quickly because of the judgment. At Spotify, the app Review ended quickly, while Amazon’s Kindle app now also contains direct shopping links on the web for the first time.
Among other things, the judgment stipulates that Apple is not allowed to request any statistics for off-app purchases and cannot limit links that the group had so far. Usually Apple leaves 90 percent of all apps – according to its own information – into the App Store within 24 hours. The submission followed a weekend, but more days have gone into the country.
