A touch of Mac: Apple promises more powerful iPados 26

Apple obviously puts Ipados on new legs: Version 26 announced on Monday at the WWDC developer conference not only receives the fresh liquid glass design, but also clears out restrictions for a long time. The basic improvements include significantly expanded window management. The windows receive the traffic light controls familiar from MacOS and more flexibility in positioning, as the manufacturer announced.

Ipados now supports more open windows and the exposé overview, which is also known from the MAC, which gathered all open windows in an overview and allows a quick selection. This can also be used in combination with Stage Manager and supports the extended display when users connect an external monitor to the iPad. The “complete support” for external screens is still only available for iPads with Apple’s M-chip.

Apple also promises better handling of files: The files app now enables standard apps to be set to open certain file types. Folders with files can also be placed directly in the iPad dock in order to remain at hand across the system. The list view in the files app should also provide more information and thus give a better overview. The preview app, known from MacOS, also comes to the iPad, especially for handling PDF documents. And with a menu bar for apps, Apple brings another Mac element to the iPad, through which commands can be found and executed. Developers can adapt this for their apps, according to the company.

Another fundamental addition are extended background campaigns: Apps can now perform performance-hungry functions in the background, this is displayed as live activity. This makes it possible for the first time to export a video project and change the app – so far a thing of the impossibility on the iPad itself in Apple’s final.

Ipados 26 should also bring more flexibility for audio projects, including the option to select and change the input source. For the first time, it is also possible to record audio tracks locally in high quality, for example with a video call. The new iPad operating system also integrates the innovations announced for iOS 26, the Journal diary app and a fresh calligraphy pen. Ipados 26 are expected to appear in September. The update runs on the iPad Pro (from built in 2018), iPad Air (from 2019), iPad (from 2020) and iPad Mini (from 2019).
