Just in time for the WWDC: Apple builds up rainbow sculpture in Apple Park

Together with the creation of Apple Park, Apple had also set up a rainbow in the middle of the circular spaceship, which houses a large park. Events were held under or before this and with some Apple keynote, managers appeared in the video before this. Then the art object disappeared, which also stood for Apple’s efforts in diversity (and that Old Apple logo) Suddenly at the beginning of March. But it probably does not stay that way: The rainbow in the form of a stage is expected to rescue the WWDC 2025 developer conference in June. Accordingly, craftsmen have long been in the process of rebuilding the object – or are almost finished. The structure should also be more stable than the previous one. The dismantling therefore had no political or marketing -technical reasons. Instead, Apple was just about making the rainbow “permanent”. Such a procedure is not new, for example, Apple converted its glass cubes in Manhattan in several steps, so that fewer and fewer glass surfaces were necessary.

The rainbow area is officially called “Rainbow Stage”. The sculpture consists of a total of six colored arches, those “Six Colors” that were also present in the old Apple logo. Jony Ive, once Apple’s chief designer, apparently had the idea for this. According to an intranet posting from 2019, he wanted to create something that could be recognized “immediately when the Apple stage”. The idea for the rainbow was one of those rare cases in which the first thoughts were the best functioning. “There is a response to the rainbow logo, which has been part of our identity for many years. The rainbow is also a positive and friendly expression for some of our inclusion values,” says IVE. It was difficult to find someone who “doesn’t like rainbow”.

Stage for videos and concerts

Only the group alone knows why Apple did not immediately build a more permanent structure. Supposedly, the version had never been intended as a permanent installation before the new. Apple currently uses the “Rainbow Stage” primarily for said videos and sometimes holds concerts there – especially for the employees.

For the WWDC 2025, however, developers will also come from outside on the campus, although their video demonstration will probably be near Apple’s gigantic canteen. Apple has failed real keynotes with stage appearances since corona pandemic.
