Apple’s former design director Jonathan “Jony” Ive is said to have had the hope of one day being able to make an iPhone entirely made of glass. The idea does not seem to have been buried from the manufacturer, whereby it is initially about another product: the Apple Watch.
A housing, a touch surface
Apple had corresponding patents registered years agonow a Chinese leaker claims that Apple is pursuing the plan. The account instant digitally on Weibo, which has already been correct in the past, speaks of itThat Apple is planning a computer watch, the edge of which is also made of glass-and enables touch interactions above. The Apple Watch is currently transferring to another material, be it aluminum, steel or titanium (and formerly ceramic and gold alloys).
Information about where the information comes from does not make instant digitally. One problem remains durability: the glass would have to be reinforced, similar to the Apple already makes it with “Ceramic Shield” with its iPhones. However, computer watches are often exposed to harsh conditions in everyday life – people like to cling to tables or door frames with their watches or even drop them when putting on. The question is also how a watch housing consisting of a glass would be connected. It would have to consist of parts that would then probably be glued.
Sapphire glass has long been interesting for Apple
Instant digital does not provide any information on when such a product could appear. The next Apple watch variants are likely to stay in the old design. Most recently, Apple had increased the screen size at Series 10, so that the large version of the watch reaches the ultra. Nothing has changed in the form factor itself for years, Apple optimized above all. Here a new glass housing would fit quite well, especially since the design itself would not need large conversions.
It would also be interesting to see how the different components behave. Buttons and digital crowns may also have to be made of glass and the question is still whether antennas and sensors can interact better or worse with the new material. Apple had carried out long experiments with sapphire glass and wanted to acquire many crystals.
