After spell against Apple: iPhone 16 finally comes to Indonesia

The iPhone 16 has been on the market since September. However, the four variants of Apple's current top smartphone have not yet been available in Indonesia, although the country with its almost 285 million often offers young residents for Apple an interesting chance of sales. The reason: Since autumn, the US group and the government in Jakarta have been fighting as to whether and how much Apple should invest locally. But now the dispute seems to be finally enclosed: Apple was able to raise the import spell and announced that to finally deliver from April 11th. At the same time, the newer iPhone 16e also comes to Indonesia.

Apple originally had to invest a good 100 million euros in Indonesia, but the sum had been undercut by around 13.5 million euros. The response from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Industry in Jakarta came promptly: the iPhone was refused to have the iMei (International Mobil Equipment Identity) including approval, the IMEI is a number that makes devices identifiable. Then there was a month back and forth, in which investment amounts of $ 1 billion were in the meantime.

Apple wanted to create educational institutions and research centers, but the government, however, wanted to produce local iPhone components. Finally, it was said that accessory products such as Airtags could soon be available. At the end of February everything looked like the import spell was finally lifted. This is exactly what seems to have been done with the necessary approval.

Allegedly, Apple has even managed to obtain a “local component content” certification, which is 35 to 40 percent-as exactly, remains unclear. Now there should be a $ 300 million investment plan, which provides for two factories in Bandung and Batam, one of which is operated by Luxshare.

Airtags (up to 20 percent of the total global production) as well as accessories that have not yet been detailed are to be produced here – possibly cables. However, there should initially be an actual iPhone production in Indonesia. The “Local Component Content” rate can also be met with software components.
