WhatsApp should be able to translate text messages into different languages in the future. According to the company, the function moves directly into the messenger, with Android users in particular benefit from improvements.
The Company explainedthat users can open a menu in a different language by a long printing on the text and type them on “translation”. Now you have to choose the language into which the message is to be translated. You download the language packages to save it for further translations. According to WhatsApp, messages can be translated into both individual and group chats and channels.
WhatsApp for Android with automatic translation
While the function can be used in both the iOS and Android app, the Android version offers another function: Because users of Android devices can activate an automatic translation for a complete chat thread. This should be able to translate all the news incorporated in a chat without having to select them individually.
Meta points out that the translation does not take place in the cloud, but directly on your own device, “where WhatsApp cannot see it”. This differs from the meta-AI functions in WhatsApp, which are carried out in the cloud by “private processing” and have been viewed critically in the past few weeks. Most recently, audits were uncovered by audits in the “Writing Help” function. In addition, the former WhatsApp security chief had filed a lawsuit for inadequate data protection against Meta.
To introduce the new function, the number of supported languages is manageable: The translation should be in iOS in All 21 of Apple’s 21 languages supportedincluding German. On Android, it starts with only six languages, namely English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic. Incidentally, the reduced language offer under Android can also be found in the possibility introduced at the end of 2024 to transcribe voice messages – German is still missing there today.
