GPT-5 Too unfriendly: Openai again relies on 4o as a standard model

From the point of view of some users, GPT-5 does not hit the right tone. The large update of the Large Language Models (LLM) from Openai does not act friendly enough for some users can be read in forum posts. This and other points have now apparently prompted Openai to switch the standard model back to GPT-4O for paying customers. Openai boss Sam Altman announced the change at X. She is also in the Release Notes to read.

Together with this change, users of GPT-5 can now manually switch between the modes “Auto”, “Fast” and “Thinking”. This is also a reaction to criticism because the automatic switch did not work properly for some. This should actually make it easier to use the chatbot if users have to deal with fewer setting options. And Openai has introduced new connectors with which users can connect the AI with services such as Google Docs – but not for the time being in Europe.

“Most users will choose car, but the additional selection will be useful for some people,” Altman explained the change in the routing of GPT-5. In this context, he also gave limits from the model presented a week ago. Thinking mode (thinking) is currently limited to 3000 messages per week. If you cross this, you will get more messages about GPT-5 Thinking Mini. The context limit is 196,000 tokens. Depending on the use, Openaai at Openaai must adjust the limits again, says Altmann.

In addition to 4O, paying users now also have quick access to other models via the web interface. Among other things, O3, 4.1 and GPT-5 Thinking Mini can be found there. So that these appear in the menu, we only had to activate “Show Additional Models” in the tests. 4.5, however, is only available for Pro users who pay the more expensive tariff because it needs a lot of hardware performance.

In connection with the criticism of the “personality” of GPT-5, Altman said that Openaai is working on an update that makes the new model appear “warmer”. However, it shouldn’t be as “annoying” as GPT-4O. An apprenticeship that is pulled out of criticism at Openaai is that in the future the personality of the model wants to be more adaptable by the user, said the Openai boss.

Openaai also announced new connectors for chatt. However, these are not available in Europe for the time being. Plus users can connect the services Canva, Dropbox, HubSpot, Notion, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft teams to the AI. Pro user additionally github. The so-called connectors can still be activated in the beta phase and via the settings. They allow the AI to access the user data for the respective services, so that transfers are omitted by hand. Connectors for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts should follow.
