Apple plans to replace all mechanical buttons on its feedback buttons. This is clear from a publication of Setsuna Digital in WeiboS Although according to analysts such as Ming-chi-ku The idea of such a move was abandoned in 2023.it seems to be going on, but this time not only for the company’s smartphones.
Feedback buttons allow the programming of more than one function for each individual button, based on how strongly or how lightly we press it. They also allow indication when pressed, which creates the illusion and feeling of mechanical movement.
Apple’s intentions to introduce this type of buttons date back to 2022, with the first planned device with them to be the iPhone 15, but that has not become a reality. Subsequently, a number of internet rumors claimed that the debut was delayed for the release of the iPhone 16 Pro, which also turned out to be false.
Project Bongo, like the code name of the initiative, however, seems to be back on the table, but this time, in addition to the smartphones of the Cupertino giant, the buttons are also planned for other Apple ecosystem devices.
Setsuna Digital also adds that the production price is not the main cause of the delay, but rather problems with pressure errors and proper activation of the user-set feature.
According to the publication, the current design is integrated directly into the phone frame and there is no feeling of pressing a mechanical button – something that apple He wants to adjust.
Delaying the integration of feedback buttons is also related to Apple’s desire to first introduce serious improvements to its displays and batteries, which we expect to become a reality with the release of the iPhone 17 this fall.
